Halloween Candy Yogurt Bark

When Life Feels Like a Pile of Dry Bones

As October wraps up, I know many of us are bracing for the candy avalanche that’s about to hit our homes. Whether it’s from trick-or-treating, school parties, or just our own “stress snacks,” somehow those mini chocolate bars always find their way into the house. I admit, a lot of it ends up in the trash — but I’ve also found creative ways to use the leftovers! Two of my favorites are my Kit Kat Yogurt Bark and M&M & Reese’s Granola.

While we’re not a big Halloween household, we still find ways to celebrate the season — usually with homemade pizza at my parents’ house and some cozy family time. As the air turns crisp and November approaches, it’s officially “soup season” in my kitchen. I’ll be making my Loaded Sweet Potato Soup and testing a new mac and cheese recipe for the holidays, so stay tuned!

But this week’s episode took an unexpected turn — all thanks to a childhood song. Remember “Dem Bones”? I recently looked it up and discovered it’s actually based on the book of Ezekiel. That connection felt like such a “God wink.” I’ve been studying Ezekiel lately and, honestly, struggling a bit. You know those times when you’re still showing up in faith but everything feels dry? That was me — reading scripture but not feeling it.

Then I landed in Ezekiel 37 — the story of the valley of dry bones — and it stopped me in my tracks. God tells Ezekiel to speak to the bones, to call them to life again. As I read, I couldn’t help but think about the “dry bones” in my own life — those areas that once felt full of purpose but now seem lifeless.

It hit me: sometimes God calls us to see past the rubble and ask Him to breathe new life into the broken pieces. My prayer became, “Lord, give me ears to hear, eyes to see, and set my heart on what You’re showing me.”

Ezekiel’s next vision in chapter 40 is one of restoration — a new temple, a new beginning. That’s where I want to stand — on the edge of restoration, saying, “Lord, what can we build from this?”

So I’ve started a new practice: after each chapter I read, I go back and write out every verse I highlighted. It’s a way of asking, What are You trying to show me, Lord? Because we don’t just need a “breath of fresh air” — we need the Holy Spirit to breathe real life into us again. Maybe the rubble we’re standing in can become the stepping stones to something new.

As we head into November, I’ll be sharing a Side Dish Extravaganza for Thanksgiving (because we all know the sides are the real stars of the show!). Until then, take heart, friends — God is still in the business of breathing new life into dry bones.
